Future of blogs

Rumours of the death of blogging are greatly exaggerated...again

Mon 26 Mar 2007

Oh dear. So the Sunday Times in the UK has run a scare piece about the 'death of blogging' because Lindsay Lohan doesn't update her blog. WTF? But rather than query the logic, The Australian re-ran the Sunday Times piece lock, stock and barrel today. Gartner Research in the US is predicting that the total number of blogs will level out next year, anywhere between 30 million and 100 million. However, it's not clear from their data if they are only considering stand-alone blogs (a la Blogspots and Live Journal), or blogs within social software sites like MySpace. Blogging is certainly starting to dissolve into other forms, from mass-media newspaper blogs to Facebook. But dead? Not yet. I've been interviewed on this today by Virginia Trioli (702 Sydney) and ABC Canberra with Louise Maher. Trioli sounded particularly excited about the death of blogs, as she'd rather read 'edited, well-constructed prose' than 'streams of consciousness'. Of course, that neatly overlooks the numbers of edited, well-constructed blogs...
