So the Journalism and Media Research Centre has launched; champagne was smashed over the prow of the ship; many cheering songs were sung late into the night. It was a fine affair, complete with a set from DJ Ob (of Clone fame) and speeches from the UNSW Vice Chancellor Professor Fred Hilmer and John Hartigan, also known as the chairman of News Limited. It was quite a sight to see those two shake hands; back when I was working in our quality broadsheet industry, they were competing captains of media industry. They stole each other's staff, they tried to sink each other's publications, they glared at each other across the canyons of the CBD between the Fairfax and News Corp offices. What a difference a few years can make. I wonder if Hilmer is glad to be clear of the House of Fairfax, now that it's facing some particularly difficult times.
Here's Professor Catharine Lumby, the Centre Director, talking about the launch on Radio National.
