Adult Themes asks what it means to be an adult in the 21st Century. Are the values of adulthood under threat, as many in the media punditocracy would have it, or are we seeing a reformulation of adulthood and a new recognition of the diversity of today's adults?
Each chapter focuses on one theme commonly associated with the idea of 'adulthood', and uses this context to unpack many of our received misconceptions about what counts as genuinely 'adult' behaviour. It is the first book on how we understand adulthood in Australia.
Awards Adult Themes has won the 2006 Manning Clark House 'National Cultural Award' for "outstanding contribution to national culture". This prestigious award is given in association with the Australian National University, the University of Canberra, the University of New South Wales and the Centre for Australian Cultural Studies. In February 2007, Adult Themes has received the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club of New York. The Type Directors Club Type Design Competition is widely regarded as the premiere venue for the world's best in type design. The book cover will be published in Typography 28, the annual of the Type Directors Club, and will join a touring exhibit of typography to open mid-year in New York City and tour through North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and East Asia. Congratulations to the amazing book designer Mark Gowing.
